As of March 1942, more and more patients were “transferred” from Wittenau to Obrawalde. The care staff organised and accompanied the transports to the killing centre.

The transports

Erhard Bloesser, a doctor in Wittenau, later testified: “The transports were put together on the instructions of the management via the head care staff and were announced to the head carers in morning reports. The head carers selected the suitable patients and submitted the lists to the ward doctor for approval. The senior care staff knew best about the fitness for duty and work activity of the sick.”

The transports were accompanied by carers from Wittenau. A total of more than 2,000 patients were taken to Obrawalde via the Hermsdorf and Grunewald stations. Of them, 1,321 are proven to have died. Most of them were murdered with drugs such as Veronal, Luminal, Evipan or scopolamine/morphine. Deaths were reported to the administration of the Wittenau Sanatoriums. The large number of notifications of death was taken for granted. The fate of almost 700 Wittenau patients remains unresolved.
